  • The performance of Karim Fawaz reaching the quarter-finals in the '64 edition was accompanied by a real Media "buzz", after the no 1 Lebanese player (and medical student ) decisively got the best of the Austrian no 1, Blancke, and more flamboyamtly, of the handsome and efficient Swiss no 1, Dimitri Sturdza ( a Rumanian Prince, noble immigrant in Switzerland from communist Central Europe). An unprecedented large crowd, plus a large newspapers photographers and sports columnists gathering, came to Brummana on a Thursday to support Fawaz in his encounter with the American Allen Fox. But the crafty and seasoned Fox dismissed the local Hero in two short sets. Nevertheless the soft-spoken , modest and elegant Fawaz became a national celebrity for many years to come, and each of his subsequent matches in doubles were a "Happening"in its own right.
